What We're Learning: November 2024

Reading & Writing: This month, we will read and write informational texts. We will focus on current events and articles from news sources. We will also learn how to understand different text difficulties and check if the information is from a trustworthy source.

Math: In math, we will work on understanding fractions and equivalent fractions. We will use area models, like rectangles, to show fractions. Students will learn to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers.

Social Studies: This month, we will study journalism and create our first edition of “What’s Brewin’ in the Lab” for the year.

Home Connection

  • Equivalent Fractions
     Converting equivalent fractions 
    In 5th grade, we learn how to add unlike fractions. This procedure involves converting the fractions to equivalent fractions with a common denominator. So, the concept of equivalent fractions is an important prerequisite to add and subtract  fractions.
  • Theme: The theme in a story is its underlying message, or 'big idea.' In other words, what big idea about life is the author trying to teach us in the writing? This belief, or idea, is universal in nature and goes beyond the specific text and/or characters.
  • There’s a lot that can feel stressful right now, but we don’t want school to be one of those things. Let us know if you need anything!
  • Please support your child at home by reviewing the times tables. If you have just a few minutes, you can practice one or two to ensure fluency.

  • Thursday, November 7th: Parent-Teacher Conferences (Half day, students get out at 11:30 AM)

  • Thursday, November 28th - Friday, November 29th: Thanksgiving Break (No school)
