5th Grade
What We're Learning: December 2024
Reading: This month, we will continue to learn and use nonfiction reading skills to help us research and learn more about the Maya, Aztecs, and Inca.
Math: This month, we will focus on deepening and extending students’ understanding of fractions and equivalent fractions and representing fractions using an area model (rectangles). They will use these understandings to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers.
Writing & Social Studies: This month, we will continue our study of the Maya, Inca, and Aztecs by doing research with informational texts. We will write an effective speech about these cultures and create an artifact for a living museum.
Home Connection
- Equivalent Fractions
In 5th grade, we learn how to add unlike fractions. This procedure involves converting the fractions to equivalent fractions with a common denominator. So, the concept of equivalent fractions is an important prerequisite to add and subtract fractions. -
What is a museum curator? A museum curator manages collections of works of art and artifacts. They take care of and display items, such as artwork, collections, historical or scientific items, as well as getting new works of art, usually with the aim of educating the public. They provide information and design displays for the benefit of visitors.
